The Year 5 pupils were lucky enough to hear a fascinating personal story from Mr Watkins, former school master and current grandfather to one of the children. After wartime service in the RAF, he was deployed as a steward to the London Games in 1948. His memories of London 1948 and comparisons with London 2012 were illuminating; no olympic diets then as the UK was still under food rationing; the Olympic Torch was carried from Dover to London and that was it).
Thank you so much for coming in to share your memories Mr Watkins. First hand accounts are always so much more interesting than books, films, museums and the internet. We hope you enjoy the London 2012 games as much.
